I am a director at the MPI for Biological Cybernetics and a professor at the University of Tübingen.
My department is organized around three closely interacting clusters of topics in and around the field of adaptive decision-making: neuromodulation, neural reinforcement learning, and computational psychiatry. Individual staff scientists, postdocs and students often work across the boundaries of these fields.
We operate across scales of analysis and explanation. Although we are largely performing theoretical and computational research, we generate some empirical data of our own (currently, mostly experiments with humans using online platforms such as Prolific; but ultimately also fMRI and MEG experiments) and collaborate with a wide variety of groups around the world doing experiments on humans and other animals. We seek to use and develop new and theoretically-appealing methods of modelling and understanding behavioural and neural data, and to design experiments to refute and refine models.
